Key Experiences

Was a Teacher for three years and now on the DLG Graduate Programme
Growing up, I was never quite sure what I wanted to do career wise. After studying Psychology at university I went into Teaching as I really enjoyed working with children and making a difference to the lives of others. Although, I enjoyed many aspects of Teaching I felt that I needed to pursue a career that had fewer restrictions and had more avenues for progression. It was at this point that I left Teaching and started the Grad Programme at Direct Line Group (DLG). I was initially attracted to the Human Resources strand as this was an area that I wanted to pursue. Since joining DLG, I have been pleasantly surprised by the many development opportunities available across the business. With DLG’s many functions, ranging from Pricing and Underwriting to Digital, there are a wealth of opportunities to expand your knowledge and try new things which you wouldn’t get to do elsewhere.

Current Position

I provide a professional and efficient service for our customers
I am currently working as a Motor Retention Consultant in my third rotation of the Grad Programme. This is a fast paced customer-facing role and involves speaking directly with customers about their insurance policies. This has really given me an insight into the front-line operations at the core of the success of Direct Line Group. I am also responsible for monitoring and improving the performance of myself and my team members in relation to customer reviews, trading metrics and adherence to business regulations.

Main Motivations

Participating in exciting projects with supportive colleagues
The great thing about the Grad Programme is that you can get involved in and take ownership of projects which have a big impact on the business. Moreover, DLG fosters a relaxed and open environment where colleagues are approachable and diverse thinking is embraced. Being able to share my thoughts and ideas in a FTSE 100 company makes me feel valued.

With four rotations in different business areas you get a real insight into how different departments operate and how this impacts DLG as a whole. What’s more, you are supported in developing your soft skills and undertaking professional qualifications such as the Certificate in Insurance.

Top Advice

Take ownership of your personal and professional development
My advice would be to remain open-minded and fully immerse yourself in all your rotations. This will allow you to grow both personally and professionally. I would also recommend networking with people across different departments, as this strengthens working relationships and helps you understand what different departments do. Finally, be confident in suggesting ideas and solutions.

Greatest Achievement

I provided the social media content for the Grad Recruitment Campaign
My main highlight of being at DLG was having my Graduate Recruitment photos and videos shared on our social media channels. During my first placement I was tasked with producing and editing photos and videos of individuals sharing their experience of being on the Grad Programme. Although it was challenging to get all this content, it was very rewarding to see the finished products on our social media channels and play a key role in the Graduate recruitment campaign. Furthermore, having my blog on diversity in DLG published on our social media channels ahead of 2017’s National Diversity awards was a real honour.
