Key Experiences

From studying History at Sussex Uni to managing large IT deliveries
I started my career as an IT Business Analyst at Legal & General Insurance. I moved to DLG to take up an IT Project Manager position as it was a good opportunity for me to develop my knowledge and skills in the end to end delivery lifecycle. Whilst working as a PM at DLG, I also had the opportunity to fulfil a Supplier Relationship Manager role which helped me develop my stakeholder management skills and understanding of contract negotiations. From here I moved on to managing large releases containing multiple projects where I could not only broaden my own project and programme management skills, but also help to coach other PMs I was working closely with. One of my main drivers is to help grow and coach others so my next natural move was into a Senior Scrum Master role which is a servant leader role and very focused on empowering and coaching others to fulfil their role and their potential.

Current Position

Senior Scrum Master leading transformation to agile ways of working
DLG are adopting more agile ways of working. I am currently working as a Senior Scrum Master helping to lead our agile transformation programme within Technology Services. This was a great growth opportunity for me personally to learn new ways of working, engage with new people and to really add value and drive change within DLG. When I moved into this role, this was very much new territory for me and so DLG supported me by providing the appropriate external training and also access to on site coaches. This role is very much focused on educating our community on Agile and Dev Ops ways of working, piloting such ways of working on specific projects and learning from our experiences and working collaboratively with people to change mind-sets and culture to facilitate our move to agile.

Main Motivations

I am empowered to really drive change and add value within DLG
My key motivations are to help and empower people to reach their potential and to bringing people together to drive through value adding transformative changes. The Senior Scrum Master role I am currently undertaking on the agile transformation programme allows me to do both on a daily basis.
On the pilot projects I am working with and coaching other Scrum Masters and scrum teams to help them mobilise and run their teams using the agile Scrum methodology. The primary role of the Scrum Master is to do anything they can to help the team perform at the highest level. I spend my time coaching other Scrum Masters on how to do this; i.e. helping identify ways to remove impediments and how to best facilitate collaborative meetings etc.
The main thing that attracted me to this role was the potential I have to make real, lasting and value added changes within DLG by changing mind-sets, ways of working and removing anything that blocks our progress towards this.

Top Advice

Seek out every opportunity to learn and grow
I have undertaken different roles during my career and each one has taught me something new and has helped me grow both in a professional and a personal capacity. I am the type of person who doesn't like to stay still so I do look for new opportunities which allow me to do something different and develop in something new. This doesn't always mean changing roles; there are often opportunities to do new things within your role if you find them. For example, I recently initiated establishing some a new Communities of Practice within Technology Services because I feel they will add value for like minded people and it is a chance for us all to learn new skills from each other.
Although reaching out for new things can seem daunting at first, my advice would be to try it and experiment with things. From my personal experience you will always learn something whether you succeed or fail. And to fail is only the First Attempt In Learning so always learn, adjust and try again.
